Deity Work Series Part 2:
Invoking Goddesses of the Heart
Born of Water
Hello again, welcome back my beloved Deity Work series! While the world around us remains a scary place more often than not, I thought I would jump right into a new post that embodies love, empathy, healing and compassion. I think throughout this series it is essential to reiterate that what the old gods represent is not exactly outside of ourselves. We turn to the gods and their power to enhance and manifest the qualities that we seek from them in our own lives and souls. I believe that we are all capable of embodying exactly what they portray, and it is safe to think of them as teachers and guides. In order to bring more love into this world and our collective's cumulative energy, we first must bring about more love within ourselves. This is where I would like to begin, because doing the inner work is a devotional act to these goddesses and will allow you to connect with them very seamlessly. The more that we nurture ourselves, the more we invite these goddesses’ energies into our lives and attract love in all forms.
The shadow work is certainly easier said than done. I am sure anyone reading this has experienced a catastrophic internal or external relationship. I myself have experienced the battlefield of love. Trying to ‘make things work,’ sacrificing my own needs and desires to appease, fighting for a connection that was never rooted in reality, longing for a person that doesn’t know me or see me as who I am. I have loved narcissists, abusers, and users. After surviving the worst of it, I realized that I fell right into these traps because I never established my own self-worth. I allowed others to decide it for me for a very long time. Which made it very easy for awful people to take advantage of me in every way imaginable. What's tragic is I was just as neglectful to myself as these monsters were to me. Throughout my life I gathered so much pressure from the world that I never felt good enough, even for myself. Maybe I always had the weight of the world on my shoulders because I didn’t feel deserving of the capacity of love and emotional depth within me. I was scared and didn't understand what to do with all of this emotion and energy inside of me. The world threatened my innocence and sensitivity more and more as I grew up, so naturally I began to perceive love and vulnerability as weakness. I channeled so much negativity and anger from the world around me and I didn't know how to handle my turbulent emotions; consequently, with no proper outlet, it all was directed at me at the end of every day. A war with myself I could never win for the longest time. I still have to fight it. I realized much later that I deemed monstrous people worthy as an act of self-harm and those relationships brought me some of my soul’s hardest lessons. Turns out, they were far scarier than sitting with myself and my own demons.
Abuse and self-sabotage aren’t exactly my favorite topics, but learning to love yourself, I mean REALLY love yourself, makes it worth my while to share things so personal with the world, like how I got out of some soul crushing rock bottoms. I don’t mean by saying little mantras or taking myself out for little treats, (these things are beneficial yes, but) I am talking about the self-love that comes from immense commitment and vulnerability, like empathizing with your darkness, completely forgiving yourself, and demanding unwavering respect from all around you, including your own mind. This also entails surrounding yourself with people who bring you up and who are like minded and higher vibrational beings. It includes seeking dynamics and environments where you feel encouraged to thrive and share your unique power with the world around you. Furthermore, it is a practice of disregarding societal expectations or limitations. It is the termination of perfectionism and comparison. This also includes the prevention of doing things that will ultimately and purposefully lead to disappointment and other negative feelings, like methods of self-punishment. It takes deep courage and self-awareness to truly embody love. It is especially no small feat if you too have gone through abuse (or what I refer to as my periods in hell). I believe that the keys to starting your journey of self-love are consistency and curiosity. Consistency in showing up for yourself and wanting to change for the sake of your own wellbeing. Curiosity regarding the evaluation of what has led you astray from love and what will bring you back to yourself. Opening yourself up and being vulnerable can be intense, scary, painful, and even embarrassing; however, it's more than rewarding. Learning what has closed your heart and believing in yourself enough to alchemize that pain is truly a powerful and special process. This is where lovecraft and glamour magic truly excels. This is where these goddesses shine.
Generally speaking, we all are made of energy, and our energy emits frequencies that essentially design our reality. Our frequency even attracts things and people into our lives vibrating at similar frequency, hence the law of attraction. Undoubtedly, the love we attract is partly a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. If we master the love within ourselves and truly understand our self-worth, we then attract like-minded people and situations that will bring more love, truth, and happiness into our reality. Self-love is basically a huge catalyst in transformation and attraction. This is what pertains to the goddesses of the heart: Aphrodite and Brigid. Representing opposing elementals of fire and water. I really felt inspired to highlight how natural opposites don't need to be at odds. When these forces work in unison great transformation and healing can transpire through the balancing of the outer (the physical) and inner (the emotional) worlds. The synchronicity creates a divine masterpiece. It's like finishing the last piece of a puzzle and taking in the whole picture. Which leads me into saying how I wanted to initially include Norse goddess Freya here, but I am saving her for something a little different in Part 3 that further elaborates on combative forces working in harmony. In the Greek and Celtic pantheons, these goddesses will bring you healing, warmth, inspiration, beauty, connection, and deep empathy for yourself and others. We all have something to gain from working with them, whether or not you have experienced turmoil of the heart. For love is strength, and it overcomes all. It is truly the most powerful frequency and force of nature in the universe.

Born of water, Aphrodite is not merely revered as the Greek goddess of astounding beauty. All of the gods are known to be in awe of her presence. Her emergence from the sea displays many things: her connection to the divine feminine, subconscious and emotional realms, and the natural ebb and flow of life/relationships. To fully understand Aphrodite, I feel it is important to note the representations of water and the sea. It is the element that gives life and that houses mystery, as well as light and darkness. The open water experiences both turmoil and peace equally and an immense gravitational pull. Aphrodite too serves as a metaphor for dual aspects of love and emotional connections. She too has an aura that naturally gravitates others towards her. She too is known to be inexplicably alluring and ferocious. She is a magnetic force of untamed sexuality with a combative demeanor that is instrumental in her perceptions of the nature of love. The saying “all is fair in love and war” comes to my mind when I think of her. Most would expect a goddess of love to be nothing but endearing and open hearted, however Aphrodite has her shield and sword ready to battle any matters of the heart. Hence her falling in love with the god of war, Ares. She is even said to carry arrows to pierce the heart and chains to be bind lovers to one another. Maybe love and war aren’t so different at the end of the day. I interpret a lot of her story as a means to fight for love and for the sake of your heart but let me clarify that by no means do I believe love goes hand in hand with conflict. More so that love can be both an extreme source of vulnerability, strength and motivation much like war.

Aphrodite’s cult following has several different connotations associated with this multifaceted goddess. Some devotees solely associate her with warlike attributes, bestowing her the title of Aphrodite Ariea, or the warlike. Another epithet is Aphrodite Urania in reference to her father (I am not speaking on the whole castrated dick in the sea thing that created her. I am just saying he would be technically her father) and her being the embodiment of spiritual love. My last example being Aphrodite Pandemos as the embodiment of physical love. There are actually several more. I totally understand honing a particular energy with certain deities. In fact, it can make offerings and manifestational work smoother or faster being so devoted and precise. Personally, I love honoring all aspects of the gods and goddesses. I believe there’s a right time to work with any one of them, as well as a right time to call to them for one of their particular specialties. With Aphrodite, I definitely feel her lighter, oceanic side most prominently. As always, I feel it is important to relay the reminder that any relationship you feel with divine beings is 100% unique to you, and it is encouraged to be inspired by another’s craft, but it is truly your call to determine what draws you to a deity and how you want to work with them.
Don’t fret though, nobody said you HAVE to be naked and submerged in water to develop a relationship with her. Offerings to Aphrodite include acts of service for yourself or others, done purely out of the love in your heart, as well as pink flowers, smoothies, pink/red wine, seashells, aquatic animal figurines, or crystals like peach selenite or rose quartz. Consciously cleansing or getting yourself done up is also an offering. One time I watched a girl on Instagram make the craziest sounds to imitate manatees as an offering to Aphrodite. It was one of the best things I have ever seen. It reminded me how offerings don’t need to be serious or physical. Try not to overthink it. I like to connect with her by preparing luxurious baths for myself with candles, incense, fruits, bath salts and oils, with my devotional playlist for her playing in the background. Overtime I have given seashell offerings to different creeks,
Which is a perfect introduction to glamour magic! This is a method of illusion magic that can be done in incredibly simple or elaborate ways. Glamour magic changes how you are perceived by others. I see it as not all illusion magic is glamour, but all glamour is illusory. There are many different ways to use this type of magic, but since we are focused on Aphrodite, I'll be elaborating on what I feel pertains to her (love & beauty). Magic meant to increase self-love, confidence, boost your energy, attune to your aura, and basically become an embodiment of love and beauty yourself. I am not exactly a specialist on love glamour magic, but I do know it to be a huge catalyst in attracting your desires. When you move through the world with confidence, opportunities will accumulate around you. Your nervous system learns that it can rely on you, your wellbeing naturally improves, and it has the domino effect of manifesting more determination and resilience all because of believing in your unique gifts and magnetism. Simple glamour spells include placing beauty products under moonlight to bless them before using and applying any kind of products to your body, like lotion, makeup etc., with the intention of them magically making you feel more beautiful or comfortable in your own skin. Try drawing a binded rune for love on your leg with lotion, saying a few mantras, then rubbing it in slowly. Take your favorite necklace and make the intention of it being your glamour amulet. Wear it as a reminder of your beauty and to show off your confidence. An elaborate glamour spell could include dipping in a body of water (with or without clothing) and offer something dear to you in return for another form of love, all while cleansing your body of anything blocking the love you desire. The act itself would be a divine offering to honor the birth of Aphrodite. You could go even further and imagine what it would feel like to be her while you float in the water. This all with the intention of making your energy as magnetic, beautiful, and alluring as possible to whatever you want. Honestly, I’ll for sure be doing this when the summer solstice arrives. If you can’t reach me, I am probably in the river.
lakes, and seas. I know every time Aphrodite appreciates it because I am always bestowed with a prettier shell the next time I visit. One time back at my condo in Indiana, a perfectly intact, beautiful blue hermit crab-like shell appeared right in front of my door on the walkway. I lived literally on wooden stilts off of the ground. It made no logical sense as to how it got there. I really believe it to have been a gift of the goddess for respecting the waters and always admiring their energy.
