Goddesses of the Heart Continued

Born of Fire

Aphrodite is so widely known for her beauty and influences of love, but Brigid on the other hand, is more known for her healing and life bringing power. The fire goddess of Imbolc, the pagan sabbat that marks the halfway point between winter solstice and spring equinox, is said to awaken the earth and renew the hope of life returning. My personal connection to Brigid is more rooted in love magic than anything else, so naturally Imbolc is pretty much my pagan Valentine’s Day. Brigid is not necessarily a goddess of love explicitly like Aphrodite, but her being the goddess of fertility (also a metaphor for new beginnings), healing and the hearth is pretty much what made me connect the dots. She is a protector of family and is a nurturing spirit of awakening and growth. I have a pact with her to act as a guide of my heart and to help me release the grief of loves that have passed. We work together mainly around January-March. Just like how Aphrodite has numerous epithets to her, most deities rule over many domains. I mainly highlight lovecraft in my connection to her, but keep in mind that another may highlight her role in say creativity and poetry. That focused connection could be to aid solely in inspiration and happiness.

In Irish tradition, Brigid begins life anew as the maiden when Imbolc arrives. She sets out to collect firewood and prepares to wake the earth up from its descent of the darker days. The mother goddess Danu rules over the harvest, since she represents rich, abundant life having given rise to a new race of gods in Ireland. The goddess of winter, Callieach, is said to be the crone. An older wise woman that is a symbol of rebirth and transformation that creates storms and havoc. Their interconnectedness reminds us to embrace the transitions of life and to recognize the lessons in every phase. Please note that these are not universal interpretations of the Irish triple goddess. In fact, a lot of history is lost on Danu’s people. This is just the information I’ve gathered over time and what I feel is most true in my faith to highlight.

It was during this Imbolc I attended a concert dedicated to Brigid that was so performative and magical and took place in a local church. It felt so comforting to be in a church again, solely with the goddess in mind. The songs performed were of around the world, and some have only had a lasting presence throughout history because of the Christian adaptations. I still feel very strongly about the mass spread of organized religion throughout massive lands. All of the people slaughtered for the sake of conversion, all of the slander that has come from missed interpretations of the bible resulting in oppression, hatred and division. The way it is often an excuse for people to unrightfully deem judgement on others and the way it is an undeniable force of control and fear. I was only a small child attending church occasionally with my grandparents. I had no knowledge of oppression or any perception of control, but I still thought, “how can I trust this?” I think it’s ironic I only found Christianity appealing for myself through witchcraft. It is what came first after all. The way the Sabbats inspired American holidays and the way Brigid became a Saint. It’s really all the same. Christianity can’t be all bad I suppose if the things I wholeheartedly believe in were key inspirations in the advent of this monotheistic religion.

I think with any religion, or even any tarot reading, it’s essential to take what you relate to and what makes your heart feel love and hope. It all may not resonate with you and that’s okay! It’s never necessary to force identifying with something. I really believe you can be a part of any religion and still deny any portion of it. It doesn’t make you any less of a believer. It makes you a free thinker! What feels important to me is that the old gods and old traditions have survived the onslaught of time. They may be under a blanket of new names and with much less reverence for the earth, but perhaps someday we will merge new religion with old wisdom once more. A girl can dream.

Offerings that have notably been well received by Brigid from me include red, orange and pink candles (she will eat up any kind of candle you burn in her honor honestly), poetry, handmade artwork, bonfires, totems of love, tea, religious crosses and dolls. I’ve heard her to also appreciate cooked meals and dairy products specifically, but please do not offer food to the gods that contribute to the abuse of living beings. I advise being properly educated on the horrors of the dairy industry and to acquire any food items from local, sustainable farmers. This is honestly quite important to note for offerings to any deity of any culture. Throwing some fake Kraft cheese plastic wrapped slices out would be disrespectful in my opinion, but I am only here to give advice and not to control your practice by any means! I only imply it is important to understand that even food contains energy, and it may be denied by the gods if it does not suit them.

As I finish writing this piece, I am multitasking writing in my personal journal over this year’s Imbolc and the last full moon of the year of the snake. I realized after several Tarot and Oracle readings the alignment of Aphrodite and Brigid being the focus of my Deity Work Series second part is actually quite uncanny. Which seriously has been my most used word lately. The Leo full moon of February has many names but is mostly called the Snow or Ice moon. Here lies the contrasting elementals between Brigid and Aphrodite. The moon of frozen water in the sign of ferocious fire. My intuition was already on it before my mind could catch up, which is how it normally goes. Reminding me that I am always on time with the universe, and I always know what energy is looming around me. Before this week, I was suffering from a nasty infection. It was the first time I have really been sick like that since covid. Honestly, it was a major setback mentally and physically. If I lose the energy to do the things that bring me joy, I tend to get in a viscous rut of my brain looping nonstop worry and misery. Naturally my mind, body and spirit got all fucked up and out of sync. I was feeling myself hitting another rock bottom when the goddesses rushed me with their divine wisdom and a gentle slap in the face. It is not a setback, but a purge, a detox and resting point before the lunar new year. Many outer planets have been in the wisdom of Pisces for several years now soon to move into Aries. Water moving into fire and cleansing away all of the debris that still clings to the mind, body and spirit. It feels like a collective baptism before we rise like a phoenix. This is undeniably a period of purification.

Aphrodite and Brigid’s collective message is to release unnecessary worry. Depression, anxiety and the fear of people being out to get us is so prominent right now. If you're someone with your eyes open, I'm sure you’re nodding your head. These are very unsettling times. It is important to protect your homes and loved ones and to rely on the community around you. We must purify our minds and our hearts. Peace and harmony are closer than we think. A change for the better is coming on a massive scale very soon. In the meantime, it is important to prioritize unity, happiness and resilience of the heart.

Thank you so much for being here. As aways, I appreciate your presence, and I hope the goddesses have positively impacted you in any way. If you’re enjoying my series, it would mean the world to me if you could share it with the people in your circle or reference Rainy Oracle on social media. Thanks so much!!

Remember to stay magical, open-minded, and unwavering in your faith. Till next time!

With love & gratitude,

Raina

Born of fire, Brigid’s conception is nothing short of cosmic alignment. She is said to have been created by a convergence of light and fire. A force of the hearth and the forge. Fire is the element that brings life giving warmth, and like Brigid, it too is free spirited yet fierce. Across various ancient cultures, fire is a symbol of divine presence, transformation, and purification. These themes are especially significant to Brigid as she wields fire magic. She is a transformative goddess, known as the Maiden in the triple goddess of the Tuatha De Danann, or the people of Goddess Danu. The Tuatha De Danann is a race of the eldest Irish ancestors that wielded magic. They are of many archetypes such as healers, craftsmen, kings, queens, druids, all with supernatural powers. The legend says they were banished from Heaven for having knowledge too advanced for the divine, thus they descended onto Ireland.

Basically, the triple goddess is a common symbol in several pantheons that represents the maiden, mother and crone. Comparable to Hekate or The Fates.

Speaking on faith, Brigid’s story would be incomplete with honoring her modern-day interpretations and her conversion to Christian beliefs in the Middle Ages. St. Brigid basically encapsulates all of Brigid’s original symbolism minus the witchcraft and triple goddess details. She is still associated with the coming of spring, fertility and healing. It is said that throughout the emergence of Christianity, long after her death, she still brought miracles and kindness to the land resulting in her being honored as a Saint. Imbolc became St. Brigid’s Day to continue paying tribute to the turning of the wheel of the seasons. A time to give the Saint offerings for her protection and blessings throughout the year.

Honestly, I grew up hating Christianity, but these days I’ve come to realize that I am actually not so ashamed of it anymore. I have even embraced and integrated components of it into my pagan practices.

Whether you feel more connected to Brigid the fire witch or Brigid the Saint, there is no religious discrimination when it comes to offerings or working with her. She is a great aid to individuals seeking connection, creativity and a fresh start. You can call to her for emotional healing and an increase of nurturing energy in your life. Invoke her as the watchful guardian of your home or family. Ask for her hand as you move through destructively transformative periods of time. If you often experience physical or mental ailment, Brigid reserves the power to bring relief and good health to you. Experiencing writer’s block? Deprived of connection? Has the world been feeling bleak and mundane? Invite Brigid into your life to spark the eternal flame of passion, wisdom, and inspiration into your heart.
